Merry Radio Christmas

12/25/2014

If you own the local radio station and live a couple miles from both the tower and the studio - and you're a talk-oriented, community-involved station - then you don't ever really get away from it. It's not like Walgreen's where you close on Christmas Day... or a cleaners or doctor's office or tree service or even some restaurants where you close on Christmas Eve.
Nope. You're always open, just like White Castles. I went for a drive this morning about 7 because I'm me and can't sleep past 5 and it was pretty cool to see Target, McDonald's, Walgreen's closed. The only man on the moon except for the people parked in church parking lots.
A lotta times on Christmas mornings I go down to the station and play vinyl. Sometimes my daughter would come with and introduce the albums - Up next is Bing Crosby's Greatest Christmas Hits, in vinyl. We'll start off with... You get the picture. For the past several years I've taped the Christmas morning vinyl stuff and that let me put together a log yesterday that kinda sounds like we're there and quirky and welcoming... but really I'm at home watching A Christmas Story with my family. All that recording through the years and it paid off when I also got to watch The Company You Keep with Robert Redford and Susan Sarandon this morning, the only man on the moon up and watching television.
Anyways, yesterday I spent some time putting together a mix of new Christmas songs and the old vinyl standards on recording that I've done through the years... linked by a new bumper Rob Ellis developed - Dah dah dah dah W-J-O-B. It's 50s meets grunge rock and it works for our 90-year-old dinosaur radio station still pumping out Bing Crosby and Johnny Mathis stalwarts on Christmas.
What I'm trying to say is after all these Christmases of going down there and doing it live and then missing some Christmases and just doing random Christmas songs... we kinda got it right the past day or so. Throw in some holiday IDs - This is Jimmy Skafish coming at you from another dimension - etc... and as I drove around this morning to get some gas I felt kinda proud of our little community-oriented AM radio station. And that doesn't always happen.
Merry Radio Christmas, everybody. Let it grow, let it blossom, let it flow. At midnight tonight I'll change the log and slip in a little Eric Clapton and old Elvis and some Rhiannon and One Direction. Keep you on your feet until I start blabbing again at 530 in the morning tomorrow.
Love is lovely, let it grow.
