“We wouldn’t do this for just anybody, Jimmy, but we’ll do it for you.”
I can’t remember if it was Leroy or Coach Friend who said it. It was like herding cats to get them to stand together under the basket. Coach Friend and Leroy are stern, proud men. They don’t like attention.
There were several photographers there last night - newspapers, the school, and some others. We snapped away as Don Fortner, Mike Smith, Steve Lopez, John Doherty, Dirk Sloan and Leroy got introduced and walked to center court for their plaques.
After the ceremony, I herded the three for the above photo. The other photographers scattered.
“I don’t get it,” I told Michael Osipoff of the Post-Tribune. “Part of the story here is that Munster has only had three football coaches. AND THEY’RE ALL HERE. Why didn’t the other guys take the shot? Look at this picture. It’s beautiful.”
That’s all I got for the three or four of you today - one program, three coaches, and a photo. We’re broadcasting from Winamac, LaPorte and East Chicago right now. Log on to your phone or Roku and watch high school sports. It’s beautiful.
P.S. - thanks to Tom Largus for setting up this photo.
